Roblox’s 2025 Discovery Roadmap and Ways to Reach and Engage Your Audience

Hi Creators,

We understand that connecting your experiences with the right users is essential for your success. That’s why we’re committed to providing you with actionable insights and powerful tools to thrive within Roblox’s evolving discovery system. This post will give you a look at our 2025 roadmap, highlighting the key changes we’re making to enhance your reach and connect you with more users, along with practical strategies you can implement today.

Powering Your Growth: 2025 Discovery Roadmap

Our focus for 2025 is to refine and expand our discovery systems to better support your growth. We are making several key improvements:

Enhanced Home Experience (Ongoing Improvements):

  • We are continuously evolving Home, where over 90% of platform traffic begins, to be even more dynamic and personalized.
  • Following the January launch of dynamic ranking for “People You May Know” and “Continue,” we’re expanding discovery with dynamic placement for “Today’s Picks” and a new “Recommended Paid Access Experiences” sort in the coming weeks. This will increase the visibility of your content to targeted audiences.

Improved “Recommended For You” Algorithm (Ongoing Improvements):

  • We are launching an improved “Recommended For You” algorithm that optimizes for long-term user retention by prioritizing organic recommendations.
  • Our data shows that the frequency with which users return to engage, spend, and interact with friends in your experiences are strong indicators of engagement. By showing users content they’ll enjoy, we’re giving more creators like you a chance to reach a wider audience on Home.
  • We will be updating Creator Analytics to maintain full transparency into the algorithm’s functionality and provide you with the data needed to understand and optimize your content.
  • In the coming weeks, we will provide you with a deep look into the improved Recommended For You algorithm and will arm you with the insights you need to understand and optimize for recommendations.

Friend Referral System (Upcoming Launch):

  • The Friend Referral System will soon launch, allowing you to incentivize and encourage users to refer their friends, creating a viral loop that expands your reach.
  • This system encourages existing users to bring new users into your experience, increasing user retention and overall engagement. Users can access and share referral links from user invite prompts or directly from the default in-experience invite menu.

Smarter Search and Genre Discovery (Ongoing Improvements):

  • Search is becoming smarter and more comprehensive. We’re blending results from across Roblox—experiences, avatars, people, forums, and more—and expanding genre discovery. We have also recently launched “Recently Visited” in search, which provides users with a consistent way to quickly access their recently visited experiences.
  • Ensure your metadata is accurate and detailed to maximize visibility!

Updated Charts (Recent Updates & Ongoing Improvements):

  • We’ve recently launched a new sort based on concurrent users in Charts, and we’re refining Top Charts with new genre filters and support for console and VR.
  • We will be introducing new sorts in Charts, including sorts for events, making it a prime surface to discover top-performing and popular content.

User Feedback Integration (Upcoming Launch):

  • Soon, users will be able to provide written feedback directly to you after rating an experience through User Feedback Integration, giving you valuable insights into user sentiment.

Ads Manager Enhancements (Upcoming Launch):

  • Ads Manager is getting a major upgrade in the coming weeks, putting your growth at the center! Expect more engaging ads, objective-focused setup, smarter tools, and more intuitive reporting that can help grow your experiences—all while complementing your organic efforts.

Reducing Visibility of Low-Quality Content (Ongoing Commitment):

  • We are continuing to focus on reducing the visibility of low-quality content, such as experiences with misleading titles or thumbnails or content that violates community standards. Our goal is to improve the overall user experience and ensure that high-quality creations receive the visibility they deserve.
  • To ensure your experience is seen, focus on creating original and engaging content, ensure accurate and compelling descriptions, and adhere to Roblox’s community standards.

How to Grow Your Presence on Roblox

There has never been a better time to be a creator on Roblox! Discovery serves more than 10.5 billion impressions per day, up from 7.5 billion just a year ago, presenting a massive opportunity for creations to find an audience. To maximize your impact within our evolving discovery system, consider implementing these key strategies.

  • Optimize your first impression with Thumbnail Personalization: Thumbnails are the first thing potential users see when browsing experiences. Maximize Thumbnail Personalization by keeping multiple variations active for at least 7 days between changes, showcasing new content or gameplay, and testing distinct visual concepts. Monitor your qPTR over time, understanding that temporary dips after homepage surges are normal.

  • Keep your content fresh with frequent updates: Regularly updating your experiences with new content and features keeps your userbase engaged and excited to return for more. Consider adding new items, levels, challenges, or storylines to your experiences. Hosting special events with limited-time rewards or exclusive content can also drive user engagement and encourage them to come back frequently.

  • Ensure your Experience Details Page is accurate and engaging: Your Experience Details Page is a crucial source of information for potential users. Make sure it accurately and compellingly reflects the content and features of your experience. Use high-quality images and videos, write clear and concise descriptions, and highlight any unique selling points that differentiate your experience from others.

  • Leverage Creator Analytics to optimize your experiences: Use your Analytics Dashboard to make data-driven decisions and optimize your experience. The dashboard visualizes key metrics to guide your content strategies.

We’re excited to see the amazing experiences you’ll create! Your feedback is invaluable as we continue to evolve. Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments below!

It’s nice to see an improvement in the Recommended For You section but will undistinguished games that have less than 50,000 visits be displayed in the section? I feel like this would give more attention to people who start making games and wanting to start somewhere

My biggest issue with discovery is that new, unadvertised games without an existing playerbase cannot be recommended. I really believe the algorithm should test new games with a small pool of people more often, since that would help bring up some undiscovered gold.

We’ve been having the exact opposite problem  the algorithm seems to favor new games over older ones, while older games (1+ year) that are consistently updated get almost no new players whatsoever. Even if engagement and retention stats are well above the 90th percentile in benchmark. The new games, though, fall off completely within a month or two…
Not being able to sustain small to medium sized games because they stop getting new players after a couple months is very concerning. It heavily incentivizes creating many games that look new & interesting over fewer games that have long-term player value.

I had a suggestion to make the recommendation system revolve around user-input, but I guess it’s never worth even asking :l

Well, whatever. With the upcoming system, ideally, it should promote small games, and be based more on what people with similar interests to you play.

maybe a “fan favorite” category?

User Feedback is something I desperately need! (Of course, when it’s used properly. Please don’t let unconstructive criticism get sent to me), the other changes are awesome aswell!

After reading through everything here, I see an issue of only focusing on popularity and multiplayer while not addressing the discovery issues faced by less popular and single-player games.

I know why though. The focus on multiplayer is because of the company’s vision of facilitating connection through play -or just the platform in general. The focus on reinforcing popularity is what keeps Roblox as a business thriving, generally at least. I’d argue that allowing niche content to thrive would be even more beneficial, which is why the roadmap here leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. It’s the absence of acknowledgment or -respectfully- ignorance of the problem. This approach isn’t new though.

If I were in a position to make a post about a discovery roadmap, I’d be remiss to not at least acknowledge the niche side of things, even if not able on the roadmap.

Both accounts are valid. The goal would be striking a balance between the stability of popularity and allowing newer content to thrive. Would you agree? And, if so, how might we reach that goal?

What will they do with ad sponserships via pricing, and buying them etc?

Users who engage with an experience are a strong indicator of engagement? Golly gee!

Not really experiencing this personally as long as the game is kept up to date, players seem relatively stable.

However it does feel a bit like when the game has been out for years Roblox seems to slowly run out of “high quality” impressions that get the correct target audience and keep stats maintained or improving. It does make it harder to compete. Not sure if this is mostly a game design or algorithm issue though. It may be because we don’t develop with the largest audience possible in mind, and our moderate age rating. (If this is the case, this is where proper genre sorting / non-algorithmic discovery of some sort would be incredibly helpful).

Feels like there is never really enough data and insight into how the algorithm works to really get a clear idea of what’s going on. Can definitely be a bit stressful.

I say keep it as-is.

It’d be nice for devs to get more bang for their buck, but the reality is that there’s just so many devs that want to advertise. The costs -in addition to needing an ad manager account- are an intentional barrier to entry.

My vision for discovery, Filters & Tags, wouldn’t eliminate the need for advertising. Some players don’t know they enjoy a genre or specific game unless they get it on their feed and are like- “huh this looks interesting let’s see what it is.”

That is true , you got a point

Would development of choosing recommendations (e.g. YouTube’s “Do not recommend”) be apart of future plans?
