Strengthening Our Safety Policies and Tools

[Update] August 16, 2025

[Update] August 15, 2025

Hi Creators,

Following recent feedback regarding inappropriate user behavior on Roblox, we’re sharing updates on how we plan to address these situations. We want to emphasize that our Community Standards apply everywhere to all content and user behavior, and we are actively building the technology to stop policy violations at the source. While these situations represent a small minority of interactions and content on Roblox, they nonetheless have an outsized impact on the perceptions of our platform.

In this update, we want to share the steps we are taking to address our community’s concerns while we continue to explore ways to support older audiences, always keeping safety as our top priority. These updates include:

  1. Clarifying of our policies and launching of more advanced detection methods
  2. New restrictions on content that depicts private spaces (like bedrooms and bathrooms) and spaces intended for adults (like nightclubs)
  3. Updated restrictions on unrated experiences
  4. Expanded engagement channels with creators moving forward

Inappropriate behavior across our platform

Across all of Roblox, regardless of its rating, we enforce strict Community Standards. Our Romantic and Sexual Content Policy prohibits content that depicts sexual activity or seeks real world romantic relationships, including: romantic or flirtatious gestures or communication, pursuing or soliciting romantic relationships online, engaging in unwanted flirtatious behavior or sexually explicit conversations.

Today we are clarifying that policy to explicitly prohibit implied sexual content in behaviors, interactions, settings, or anywhere else on the platform, even if the content doesn’t directly depict or strongly suggest sexual content or acts. This will include but not be limited to: avatar bodies, assets and clothes, avatar emotes, or settings/environments in experiences.

We have also heard requests from creators asking for more effective means to address inappropriate in-experience creations and behaviour. As mentioned in our Creator Roadmap (see Safety and Moderation), we are rolling out Violative Scenes Detection functionality to detect, gather evidence for, and automatically shutdown servers with user-created inappropriate behaviors (e.g. users might be able to ‘spray paint’ a sexually suggestive image). This behavior can disrupt otherwise policy-compliant games, and we want to enable more timely and transparent enforcement actions — without punishing developers who didn’t participate in that activity, and partner with those developers to modify their games to reduce the risk of violative behavior in the future.

Blocking users under 17 from Social Hangouts with private spaces and experiences primarily set in private spaces

We previously announced that Social Hangouts experiences would be restricted to users 13 and older. Today, we’re placing additional restrictions on these experiences by making any Social Hangout that includes “private spaces” (such as bedrooms or bathrooms) unavailable to any users under 17, and restricted to ID-verified 17+ users.

Private Spaces are defined as enclosed spaces that meet both of the following criteria:

  • Designed for activities that are personal and secluded (e.g., sleeping, changing clothes, bathing)
  • Designed for one person or for a very small number of people (e.g. bathroom stall, bedroom, small tent)

Although these experiences may not be violative of our policies, we’ve seen that some settings attract a higher percentage of violative behavior. Given that, and out of an abundance of caution, we’ve decided to make this content inaccessible except to users who are ID-verified 17+. All users are still required to follow our Community Standards everywhere - which prohibit sexually suggestive content or behavior everywhere on the platform.

Bathroom simulators and experiences that primarily take place in adult settings like night clubs, dance clubs, or bars will also only be available to users who are ID-verified 17+. They will not be playable, visible in top charts, or recommended to users who are not ID verified 17+. Please refer to our Restricted Content Policy for more information on what is permitted in Restricted experiences

If you believe that your experience qualifies for any of the above updates, please watch out for a message in your Roblox inbox with more information about how to comply. The Maturity & Compliance Questionnaire is also being updated today with a new question and updates to existing questions.

Unrated experiences will be unavailable for all users

Experiences that have not completed the Content Maturity & Compliance Questionnaire or have had their content maturity label removed by moderation due to inaccurate answers will be unavailable to anyone other than the developer or those working on the experience. This change will be effective in the coming months—more details to come on this soon. We will address handling historic and abandoned legacy experiences as needed.

How we’re expanding our engagement with creators moving forward

We want to ensure we are continually getting feedback from this community, and in particular striking the right balance between keeping the community safe and imposing limitations that could unfairly take down a creator’s experience. To this end, we are developing a Community Safety Council that will be made up of members from our creator community. Our aim is to be transparent with you about our policies and safety systems, and to actively listen to the community’s concerns so that we can incorporate them into our plans for the future. We’re also excited to share more about our safety efforts at RDC.

More to come.

Thank you,
RbxRocketman

FAQs (Aug 16, 2025)

Why has my experience been taken down/disappeared from search?

  • Experiences we identified as potentially being impacted by the policies we announced yesterday were made temporarily unavailable. This includes most experiences with the Social Hangout descriptor. If you are unable to find your experience via the search bar in Roblox, it may have been one of the experiences impacted.

We encourage you to retake the Content Maturity questionnaire and answer the new questions that apply to this policy update, and then submit an appeal here. You can find the correct steps to appeal below.

My experience was taken down by mistake. Fix it!

  • We are aware that existing Restricted experiences with Social Hangouts were impacted during this process. We apologize for this inconvenience and have already identified and reversed these actions. We have already acted on many appeals from the last 24 hours, resulting in restored experiences, and will continue to actively review all incoming requests.

If the new Content Maturity policies do apply to your existing Restricted experience (e.g. if your experience takes place in a bar or club), please update your Content Maturity questionnaire answers. If you believe your experience was mistakenly taken down and hasn’t been reinstated, you can submit an appeal via Roblox Support.

How do I appeal if my experience has been taken down in error?

  • All appeals must be submitted via Roblox Support. To help us process your request more efficiently, please ensure you:

    1. Submit the appeal using the Roblox-linked email address that owns the experience.

    2. Provide the specific Place ID of the experience you are appealing for.

    3. Steps to appeal:

      • Go to roblox.com/support
      • Confirm your contact information and device type
      • Set Type of help category to Moderation. A new dropdown menu will appear.
      • Set Help Subcategory Type to I was wrongly moderated for an asset I created.
      • Enter the experience place ID in the field for Asset ID
      • In the input field, describe why the moderation action was a mistake. Make sure to mention ‘my experience was incorrectly moderated’ in your appeal.
      • Click the Continue button to submit your appeal.

Other creators are copying my experience, while mine has been taken down. How can I report this issue?

  • If you find another creator copying your experience, please file a DMCA.

My experience contains content like “Private Spaces” or “Adult Settings” which are now restricted. What is the correct process for me?

  • If your experience contains this type of content, please:

    1. Update your Experience Questionnaire to accurately disclose the presence of Private Spaces or Adult Settings. If your account is not ID verified 17+, you will not be able to answer these questions. In that instance, please ID verify in order to see these questions, or add a 17+ ID verified creator as a collaborator
    2. Once you have updated the questionnaire, you may then submit your appeal through the Support Form.

As a reminder, Restricted experiences cannot change their content maturity label to anything else, and users that are not ID verified 17+ cannot play or edit Restricted experiences.

What will happen to legacy experiences under these new policies?

  • We understand the importance of legacy experiences on the platform. We will make sure these experiences remain accessible and are handled fairly.

I’m concerned my “unrated” experience will suddenly be taken down. How will this be handled?

  • We know creators are worried that their experiences might become suddenly unavailable. We want to reassure you that we will roll out any changes related to “unrated” experiences in a thoughtful and transparent way to avoid abrupt disruptions. We will work with the community to roll out these changes.

How do I know if my experience has been taken down?

  • If any of your experiences have been impacted, the account that owns the experience will have received a Roblox Message. To determine which of your experiences have been impacted, you can try searching for the experience to see if it has been hidden.

Are bathrooms/bedrooms banned outright? Or just age-gated?

  • No, they are not banned outright. Experiences that primarily take place in bedrooms or bathrooms, and Social Hangouts that include bedrooms or bathrooms, are now 17+.

Shouldn’t bedroom/bathroom simulators be 18+ (or removed) rather than 17+?

  • As a reminder, our Community Standards apply everywhere. User behavior that violates those Standards should be reported to Roblox. We are considering 17 vs 18. We’ll have more to share soon.

Why keep the “Social Hangout” genre at all instead of removing it?

  • We want to support our community’s creativity, and most Social Hangout experiences are not inherently violative or unsafe. However, due to violative user behavior that we’ve seen in these experiences, we’ve decided to restrict them to users 13 and older at a minimum, and 17 and older if they include private spaces.

How will you determine what counts as a “historic or abandoned legacy” place?

  • It will be based on a variety of factors, including information like whether the creator has been active on the platform or not. We’ll have more to share soon.

What’s the point of the questionnaire if people can just lie on it?

  • We have continual moderation that checks the accuracy of the answers that Creators provide. If we find inaccuracies, we make the experience unrated and reach out to the Creator to help them update the questionnaire. As shared earlier this year, we have also started taking more severe moderation actions on repeat violations.

What happens if devs lie on the questionnaire? Are ratings forced or penalties applied?

Will I (creators) be notified when a server is auto-shutdown so we can investigate?

  • Yes, we will notify you of automatic server shutdowns. We’ll have more information to share soon.

What about trolls/exploiters that are deliberately trying to trigger shutdowns?

  • We are aware this is a risk and have been designing this feature to reduce the likelihood of bad actors impacting Creators.

Will the Community Safety Council be open for public applications or closed/invite-only?

  • We’re working on the application process now - more to share soon!

This topic was automatically opened after 10 minutes.

You are saying the words, I’ll believe it when I see the action. These things have been said before and nothing really changed.

You say you want to get feedback from creators, but you’ve listened to ZERO feedback about the “sensitive content” policy that everyone has spoken AGAINST : The new "sensitive content" policy is extremely problematic and NEEDS to change before going live

Hey!

Thanks for replying forward about the case situation, will an individual that was mostly targeted for this whole situation gets pardoned? Their only purpose was to simply push it towards you to understand these problems and work on fixing them.
I highly understand that working with outside individuals in not something you guys don’t do, but it would be nice to at least have some minimum visibility on community’s feedback in social media and general overview towards all negative problems few social media content creators clarify such as greenlegocats.

Outside of this, I’m pretty happy about this and looking to know for the RDC and the possible discussion about improving the security and improve the avoidance against certain bad actors in Experiences.
However, I’d be down to know also on RDC about the previously announced new changes to the Roblox Studio!
Cheers!

(imagine if id get hired guys!!!)

Please read this blog post from Roblox before posting about Roblox not protecting kids. Enough misinformation is going around. This is good supplementary info to be aware of, it includes a lot of what they are already currently doing.

Great changes. Frustrating that the questionnaire is required now for everybody, but sure whatever, I get it. Better than having to defend myself and Roblox from my coworkers every time I try to talk about personal projects.

I hope we can walk this back when the angry mob is gone to 17+ at least, or do something to get a rating submitted another way for these games if they’ve been abandoned. That’s a heartbreaking amount of historical content that will now be inaccessible.

This sounds good and a small step in the right direction.

This didn’t respond to anything about the vigilante situtation though which I would like an update on soon. I am happy to see the roblox corporation finally doing something good (even if the only reason for this is because of that lawsuit). Thank you.

Also, please read the replies to this post as I’m sure they will provide helpful feedback!

Please make Unrated experinces available to users 17/18 or older.
Other than that these are all good changes.

If this will genuinely happen then this is legendary

We want to see you listen to us more, we’ll believe you when that happens! Make it happen!

I do appreciate steps towards better safety, and that’s something that’s good. But there’s a lot more that still needs to happen. Start listening to us more, we don’t like getting to your investors to talk about this stuff.

Oh and, please revert the vigilante stuff! Let people help you moderate your platform!

You claim you don’t allow Romantic Relations in real life yet your CEO wants to turn it into a dating site?

Also the criticism you have been receiving is not only because the guidelines are too relaxed but your detection methods are unsuitable. How are you going to detect and enclosed space in the thousands of games uploaded every day? Why don’t users who make nsfw content get up banned? Why are vigilantes not reached out to or guided to proper channels? Why are countless detailed reports with proof just thrown into space?

So many poor decisions are continuing . I have loved this platform for years and it is turning into an utter shit hole (excuse my language).

This Community Safety Council is great, I’d love to be apart of it. I was apart of Roblox’s Teen Safety & Civility Council and have been a large advocate online for Roblox’s Safety. I’ve worked previously with staff on policies, product, and civility and would love especially to help improve the marketplace.

We should just ban the bathroom games entirely idk why they still need to exist

W Roblox. It’s about DANG time you made this happen. But why keep these games up though.

Out of all the time you could of done this, why now? Cause you are being sued? This should of happened from the start not when all this backlash started.

A large majority of old experiences with inactive developers will become unplayable when this change goes live. Experiences last updated before a certain year should be exempt from this change (new update = no longer exempt).

I’m on board with the rest of the post, and I’m glad Roblox is taking action, but losing access to a large part of Roblox history is a shame.

Edit: I missed the section stating “We will address handling historic and abandoned legacy experiences as needed.”, which is my bad. However, I do think this is something that should be considered before the update goes live. Let’s not wipe out access to the past, thanks.

This doesn’t apply to experiences that were previously rated as inaccurate and then fixed their questionnaires, right?

Questionnaire has been required for <13 for quite a while now, this just expands the rule to all users.

Unfortunately collectively our opinions don’t matter to them, only when it impacts standard business (so lawsuits, etc). All of you guys spamming everything begging for Schlep to be unbanned is not productive and isn’t going to get anybody anywhere but this has been a thing for many many years, people are only realizing now.

If you’re talking about schlep like everyone seems to be, please be aware that what he was doing is explicitly forbidden by policy, one (unwritten?) reason being because it implicitly encourages kids (who often end up idolizing their favorite youtubers) to try and do the same thing he was doing. Nobody seems to understand that this vigilante behavior actually causes big problems, and I want to make sure that this reasoning is at least put in front of them. More details on their reasoning for this: Strengthening Our Safety Policies and Tools - #297 by PeZsmistic

IMO Roblox was too heavy handed about it, but there was a real problem to address.

Finally. A step in the right direction, but there is more that should be done.
I suggest:

  • A direct line to contact support if predatory activity arises on the platform
  • Improvement of the “Trusted Flagger” program

This is still a good start, and a step in the right direction. Let’s hope it gets better.
