Creator Roadmap: Spring 2024 Edition

Hi Creators,

Nick and Tian here. We are excited to share the Spring 2024 edition of the Creator Roadmap, showcasing the progress made on a number of launches that shipped this year, including Secret Store, Audio API (Beta), and Open Cloud Engine API for Scripting, which sought to address some of the top creator needs. Along with this, we introduced some exciting AI-powered solutions like Texture Generator, Avatar Auto-Setup, and Automatic Chat Translations. With your help, these features are already changing the landscape of the platform for the better. For instance, since chat translations launched, we’ve already translated nearly 20B messages!

For a full list of launched features, click here.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve opened up Marketplace creation to more creators, and launched a revamped Creator Store that provides 100% net proceeds to creators. We know these are major changes to our ecosystem, and we’re committed to iterating on these products to ensure they deliver value to our community.

2024: Quality and performance

There are many upcoming product features to celebrate, but we first want to reiterate that we’re extremely focused on quality and performance. In the past year, we closed or responded to 3300 bugs and counting—one of our key focus areas. Among other things, we plan to make major headway on Studio hangs this year.

We also continually work to make the user platform as stable and performant as possible. While we provide automatically scalable systems that perform well on all platforms, we see the highest quality results when our creators help optimize their content. Therefore, we’re improving our developer-enabled performance tools, such as updating Script Profiler and improving memory tooling, which make it easier for creators to optimize their own experiences.

Upcoming roadmap

We’ve updated the Creator Roadmap with our revised roadmap and removed any features launched in 2023. Following up on The Hunt: First Edition, we are excited about future events. We’ve added specific roadmap items for points of interest and events, allowing creators to define key areas in their experiences. We plan to unlock the discovery of events later this year. We’re also working on a number of enhancements to the engine, including native code generation, type isolation, and improved haptics, while also continuing to iterate and improve the Studio experience with completely revamped asset management and much more!

Click here to see what else we’ve added to the roadmap.

Be on the lookout for updates regarding our next installment of the Creator AMAs, where we’ll discuss everything monetization and economy-related.

Happy creating! :tada:

Nick & Tian

  • Builder font released.
  • Content Importer: Creating a streamlined single importer that enables users to import all their content easily.

Engine can support any type of experience

  • Native Code Generation: Improves script performance on RCC and in Studio plugins by compiling Luau to host CPU instructions instead of interpreting bytecodes in a virtual machine.
  • Updated Type Solver: This improves Luau script analysis including more accurate binary operators inferences and new type operators.
  • DataModel Isolation and Script Capabilities: The ability to insert models with scripts into experiences and have those scripts isolated from modifying the world or accessing Roblox APIs that are not explicitly allowed—making it safer to use models shared by other developers, guaranteeing configurable packages are limited to themselves, and empowering in-experience creation, including scripting, without impacting server state.
  • Type Inference for Native Compilation: Incorporating types added by Luau into the decisions made by native code generation will allow more optimizations to be performed and reduce the size of the generated native code.
  • Immersion Mode for VR: Support for tracked controllers in VR that animate avatar arms in real-time.
  • Improved Haptics Controls: Improved API for adding haptics to your experiences and UI across all supported platforms.

Create rich and lifelike worlds

  • Audio Meta Data API: Developer-facing API to help developers add audio metadata to their experiences.

Cloud creation improves collaboration and reliability

  • Comments & Annotations inside Studio: Annotate and leave comments in Studio for your collaborators.

Avatar Creation and Marketplace

  • Marketplace search and recommendations: Improve Marketplace search and recommendations to create a more seamless shopping experience.
  • R6 to 15 Conversion Tool: Streamline the conversion of existing R6 experiences to R15 with tools to migrate characters, animations and scripts.

Grow and engage your audience

Roblox Home page connects you to your ideal audience

  • Thumbnail Personalization: You can A/B test your thumbnails to optimize your conversion.
  • Improved Experience Details Page: We’re updating the Experience Details Page to improve usability and conversion. We’re adding the experience icon to mobile experience pages and showing improved insights about the experience to help users decide better.
  • Points of Interest & Events: We’re working on helping you drive the discovery of events and key places in your experience

Powerful search and browse capabilities

  • Unified Search Result Page: Improved ranking of experiences, people, marketplace items inside search result page and ranking them based on their relevance to the user query regardless of content type
  • Clickbait suppression: Detecting misleading and clickbait content and decreasing user exposure.

Benefit from a growing creator ecosystem

Roblox Cloud helps you scale

  • Memory Stores Enhancement: Improve Memory Stores to support the key use cases better: 1) A data structure, HashMap, that has much higher limits for features like Server List, 2) Open Cloud APIs for Memory Stores that unlock use cases like external live leaderboards.
  • Improved delivery of 3D meshes: LoD (Level of Detail) generation for your meshes will be much better and continuously improve over time. More optimized delivery for 3D meshes to reduce client asset download times.

More ways to earn and advertise

  • Roblox Groups ‘Announcements’ can be posted via Guilded

Creator Hub is your key to success

Collaborate more effectively as a team

  • Groups owning Groups: Set up more complicated hierarchies with your collaborators by managing groups owned by your primary group.
  • Asset Privacy and Permissions: Animations: Sharing animations with friends and groups.
  • Asset Privacy and Permissions: Meshes, Images, Models and Packages: Improved sharing of meshes, images, models and packages.
  • Asset Management: We’re launching a revamped Asset Manager in Studio. This will enable users to organize (folders/labels) and search assets in their accounts and their groups’ accounts easily. We’ll be deprecating the existing Asset Manager and migrating user inventory out of Toolbox into the new Asset Manager, and Toolbox will become solely focused on Creator Store content.

I’m looking forward to lots of these additions!

Please don’t deprecate R6, because most obbies rely on R6.

It’s extremely dissapointing to hear that the Next Generation Studio UI is delayed. I and so many others have been highly anticipating this update. Is there any more info as to why this delay has taken place? Last we heard it was set for june-july. Is this still the case?

The whole point of the R6 → R15 conversion tool is that its meant to allow creators to get the advantages that come with R15 (not outdated and supports features that R6 doesn’t) whilst still having the look and feeling of R6 (at least from what I’ve seen and how I’ve seen it be described.)

I don’t look forward to it, because most UI upgrades to most creative programs often result in huge dissatisfaction and huge reductions in productivity resulting in community backlash and ultimately a rollback or a third party upgrade / version that includes the old layout.

The existing icon update released a few years ago dramatically reduced my productivity as it is NOT colour-blind friendly, and nor is it easy to use for those with good colour-vision.

R6 specific glitches would not work anymore.

And R15 can never replicate R6 because of the extra body limbs, unless they released an animation pack that actively treated the limbs as one part rather than two to replicate the r6 animations, as well as support for R6 animations wherein the object they refer to will simply move the entire arm / leg rather than indivudual segments.
Even then, as stated above, some games rely on specific physics and features of R6, and thus it would be detrimental to deprecate it. There’s no need to deprecate it.

Hasn’t Roblox already patched a few of those R6 specific glitches. If Roblox were to continuously update R6 like they do with R15 they probably would end up patching those either way.

Best you can do is either somehow code the glitches back in (if possible idk I’m not much of a scripter) or request that Roblox somehow make them work with the converted characters.

I hate to be someone who just complains all the time. But so many of these upcoming updates are just so dull. There is ZERO mention of increasing light capacity. Zero mention of the Clouds update we were shown. Zero mention of an update to Water, or Skyboxes. What happened to Humanoid Controllers?

So many features just forgotten. A lot of these features don’t allow Roblox Experiences to innovate and take it to the next level. Not sure if people agree with me but I feel like more could be done.

  • Roblox is doing enough
  • I share your dissatisfaction

I love native compilation, especially since Type Inference is on the list now. I finally have a performance reason to use type annotations apart from having better type checking, and I hope that the performance and quality of existing features will be improved in the future, such as R6 and the Humanoid, to allow for experiences with high performance at very high player counts.

I cannot stress how excited I am for this. It’s going to take typed Luau from almost unusable to really good. I’ve been tracking its progress in the Roblox open source server Quenty runs and it’s looking amazing.

Roblox historically is awful at keeping to their promises, and especially bad at fully developing new features before forgetting they exist outright and breaking them due to their awful quality control, ie users wishing to use Vulkan lighting which dramatically improves performance over DX11 for high-end systems no longer auto-switches, when it used to many years ago, resulting in awful performance on high-end machines.

WHY has future lighting still not fixed its shadow overlap bug? Why have bugs that stem from floating-point inaccuracy not being addressed not been fixed or patched in the ways that are trivial across all other open-world engines and games in the entire industry? Why do we not have better control over outright making our own physics and lighting engines to actively replace the existing ones?

It’s a mix of priority and mobile. Mobile ultimatley stops roblox achieving things I’m sure the devs would love to do. But not just that. Is fixing a future lighting bug going to make them money? No. So it isn’t on the to-do list.

Just because something doesn’t directly make a profit doesn’t mean it has no effect, anyone who has a basic understanding of business knows that, and Roblox clearly aren’t very good at such.

Better developer satisfaction and tools means more productivity, more productivity means more polished game updates and more frequent game updates, such as new gamepasses or developer products, new updates and more refined updates means more user satisfaction, and more user satisfaction means the user is more likely to buy gamepasses or developer products, thus more likely to buy Robux, which earns Roblox money. Done, simple.

Developers won’t be motivated by the development process being difficult or actively made worse.
Player’s won’t buy items for a game that they dislike.
Players WILL buy items for a game they enjoy, and will play a game for longer if they enjoy it.

In my opinion, Roblox doesn’t focus enough on their existing engine features and performance; e.g., R6 really deserves an upgrade with its extremely high popularity and usage among popular Roblox games. Roblox has such great potential as an engine, but that is wasted on features that either no one asked for (therefore creating unneeded issues and work) or should have been added later after more important features and improvements were made.

Pls do not convert R6 to R15 :skull: Roblox is gonna die if you do that

Roblox also does not fully polish or quality control new features either, many features have been pushed which are extremely buggy resulting in huge downtime and major game-breaking bugs.

Updates are also known to break existing features, their quality control is frustratingly bad…

They wont remove R6 don’t worry.
